Hummus is a popular Middle Eastern dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas or other beans, blended with tahini (a paste made from ground sesame seeds), olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and various seasonings. It has a creamy texture and a rich, nutty flavor, making it a versatile and nutritious addition to a variety of dishes. There are many variations of this dip like classic, roasted red pepper hummus, garlic hummus etc. We will cover the recipe of the classic version below.
Ingredients:
- 15 oz fresh garbanzo beans soaked for 8-12 hours
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (about 1 large lemon)
- 1/4 cup well-stirred tahini
- 1 small garlic clove, minced
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for serving
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- Salt to taste
- 2 to 3 tablespoons water
- Dash of paprika, for serving
Instructions:
- Prepare Chickpeas:
- Boil the garbanzo beans them in a pressure cooker or instant pot with enough water so that beans are fully soaked.
- After beans are boiled them drain them and rub them between your hands to remove the skin. This step will take few extra minutes but result into the dreamy hummus you will never forget.
- Combine Ingredients:
- In a food processor, combine chickpeas, lemon juice, tahini, minced garlic, olive oil, cumin, and a pinch of salt.
- Blend:
- Process the mixture until smooth. If it’s too thick, gradually add water, one tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency.
- Taste and Adjust:
- Taste the hummus and adjust the seasoning, adding more salt or lemon juice as needed.
- Serve:
- Transfer the hummus to a bowl. Create a well in the center and drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle with a dash of paprika for garnish.
- Enjoy:
- Serve with pita bread, veggies, or use as a delicious spread. Enjoy your homemade hummus!
